The transformation of Alex Oyomah clearly highlights the vision of the founders of the Bayelsa State Governor’s Cup football tournament.
Initially called The Restoration Cup, it is now called the Prosperity Cup, as it has the capacity to turn around the lives of players.
Indeed, it’s a complete transformation that turns a grassroots player into a national asset.
From the administration of Governor Seriake Dickson to Governor Duoye Diri, the objectives remain unchanged. Use football as a tool to engage Bayelsa youths and redirect their mindsets into more productive ventures.
What started as a small tournament has grown into Nigeria’s biggest grassroot tournaments and the beneficiaries remain youths and communities across the eight local government areas in Bayelsa.
Over the years, it has unearthed Bayelsa talents like Alex Oyowah, Robet Mizo, Handsome Surveyor and Precious Benjamin amongst others.
Oyowah now becomes the first player from the competition, which is unarguably Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament to win the prestigious Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
In only his first season with Remo Stars, Oyowah made significant impact as Remo Stars claimed their first ever Nigerian title.
Only the best stars play with best team. That’s the level the player from Biseni community in Yenagoa ha attained.
From Restoration Cup to Bayelsa United
Clearly one of the outstanding performers from the 2018 and 2019 editions, scouts of the state owned Bayelsa United noticed his qualities despite the fact that his team didn’t reach the finals.
A chance to train with Bayelsa United followed and Oyowah grabbed the opportunity.
Developed by Caleb FC, the opportunity to join Bayelsa United came following an impressive performance in a pre-season friendly match against the Prosperity Boys.
Every growth in football deserves more work and he was ready for the task ahead as he eventually wormed his way into the hearts of the coaches.
Oyowah became a regular and helped Bayelsa United gain promotion to the NPFL with Robert Mizo, another graduate of the competition at the end of the 2021/22 season.
A typical box-to-box midfielder, Alex was credited with nine goals and several assists as well as many man-of-the match awards as Bayelsa United secured their NPFL promotion.
His first experience in Nigeria’s top flight during the 2022/23 season was amazing as it didn’t take long for his qualities to be noticed.
Rivers United
With his rising profile, it came as no surprise when rivals, Rivers United, came for his services

It was a move he couldn’t resist and fans of Bayelsa United knew his exit was inevitable.
At Rivers United, he got the chance to play in the continent.
Remo Stars
Following his outstanding performance for Rivers United during the 2023/24 season, a switch to Remo Stars became inevitable and he arrived Ikenne for a new adventure.
Who turns down the best team in the country and a chance to play in Africa’s top rated club tournament?
However, fans of Rivers United expressed shock he was allowed to join rivals, Remo Stars.
According to Pulse Sports’ report, fans on X didn’t hide their disdain at the attitude of the Port-Harcourt side.
“Rivers United letting go of their best player of the just concluding season, Oyowah to Remo Stars, tells me they aren’t serious,” one fan expressed on social media, summing up the general sentiment among the Pride of Rivers faithful.
Another supporter went even further, questioning the club’s decision-making process, asking, “Dear @RiversUnitedFC, how on earth did you let Alex Oyowah leave? And of all teams, Remo Stars?”
Announcement by Remo Stars
On July 23, 2024, Remo Stars proudly announced his arrival via their X account:
“Joining the Sky Blues Stars for the new season is dynamic midfielder, Alex Oyowah.”
NPFL pundits clearly tipped him to excel at the club and he didn’t disappoint.
Oyowah wasted no time to integrate into Daniel Ogunmodede’s style at Remo Stars and contributed immensely to the club’s 2024/25 title win.
On April 25, 2025, Oyowah scored the goal that pulled Remo away from his former team, Rivers United with an away win at Shooting Stars, in Ibadan.
In fact, he won the NPFL title in his first season at the Ikenne side.
Prosperity Cup Ambassador
With the NPFL on break, expect the Biseni lad to be at the Samson Siasia Stadium to boost the next generation of Prosperity Cup stars when the final is decided on Saturday, June 14.
Indeed, dreams come true and the visioners of the Prosperity Cup will be excited that in Oyowah, the conveyor belt delivered the right talent.
The quest to unearth the next football talents from Bayelsa continues with the support of Governor Duoye Diri, who will be proud of Oyowah’s exploits as a Nigerian champion.
