Ethiopians, Nigerians Shine at Yenagoa City 10km Race

 

Ethiopian and Nigerian runners dominated the maiden edition of the Yenagoa City International 10km Race, on Saturday, in the Bayelsa State, which was flagged off by the Governor of Bayelsa state, Senator Douye Diri.

Although Habtamu Birhane entered the history books as winner of the inaugural Yenagoa City International 10km race in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, two Nigerians, Gyang James and Francis James, finished well to show the growth of the sport in the country.

Birhane crossed the finish line in 29:23 minutes to claim the $5,000 first prize.

James, put up a good outing in 29:59 minutes to finish behind Birhane and won the $3,000 second prize, while Francis came third in 30:16 minutes to take home the $2,000 prize.

It was an Ethiopian affair in the women’s category as the trio of Shewaye Dugo Tolosa (33:50 minutes), Tigist Girma (34:07 minutes), and Gacasho Jilo (34:57 minutes) claimed the top prizes.

Speaking after the event, Governor Douye Diri, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe congratulated the organizers, Nilayo Sports Management, and the State Sports Ministry for the success of the event.

He said: “This race has come to stay in Bayelsa, and we’ll do our best to improve on the next edition.”

Nilayo Sports Management CEO, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade thanked Governor Diri for his support: “We’re committed to organizing remarkable long-distance race events that showcase Bayelsa’s hospitality and sports excellence”, she stated.

It was a good atmosphere in Yenagoa as spectators applauded participants.

With the success, the Bayelsa State government has displayed capacity to deliver road race in Nigeria.
