- Race events in Muscat in November
Oman has signed a five-year deal with global sporting events organiser Ironman to help promote the Gulf state’s ambition to become a top sports tourism destination.
The agreement, signed with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, will start from January 2026 and Ironman will promote Oman’s adventure tourism, events and heritage sites in its global sports campaigns.
Ironman, which has its headquarters in Florida in the US, will also stage sports events in Oman and promote the country worldwide through its international marketing campaigns and website.
As part of the deal, Oman will start hosting annual Ironman racing events in Muscat every November. The events will feature swimming in open seas, cycling routes and triathlon races.
“This affirms the ministry’s commitment of making Oman a global tourist destination to attract visitors, especially from the European markets, with various interests and preferences,” said the tourism ministry.
In the first four months of this year, Europeans tourists made up 40 percent of 831,751 hotel guests in the Gulf state, according to the National Center for Statistical Information.
The sultanate is building resorts in different parts of the country to increase the number of tourists it can accommodate.
It has set an ambitious target of attracting 16 million tourist arrivals by 2030. Last year, Oman attracted about 3 million tourists.
Ironman regularly stages sporting events in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
