Lagos derby boosts EuromatchNPFL brand profile as former champions renew rivalry in Aba

 

Lagos takes centrestage in the EuromatchNPFL this Wednesday with the rescheduled clash between Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City.

The promotion of Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos from the second tier Nigeria National League has boosted the quality of the Lagos ties.

It is a battle for the ownership of Lagos between the more established sides as Sporting spent a season before relegation, while Ikorodu City is in their third season as a top flight side.

It is their first NPFL clash for both sides with contrasting fortunes in the league and will go enter the history books as one of the biggest clashes in the city in a decade.

The meeting brings together clubs with active support base in Lagos.

Others:

In Aba, former champions, Enyimba, now bottom of the log will try to build from their performance in Kano where they grabbed a point against Kano Pillars. The Aba side is home to Shooting Stars Sports Club.

Interestingly, both teams are amongst the most successful in the history of the NPFL and Shooting Stars Coach, Salisu Yusuf, is a former coach of Enyimba.

Enyimba have won the Nigerian league nine times, while Shooting Stars have five titles.

The Aba-based side, however, have endured a difficult start to the season and still in search of a win this term.

Katsina United will also host Rivers United, while Warri Wolves welcome Rangers.

Rivers United have since crashed out of continental assignments and will now concentrate on domestic matters.
