Pay TV brand, GOtv, last Saturday, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, organized the 25th edition of the GOtv Boxing Night as the brand continues to ensure the sport reaches for the top.
Conceived in 2014, the event has since become the biggest boxing event, not only in Nigeria, but in the West African sub-region.
To underscore its commitment to the sport, GOtv introduced never-seen-before monetary rewards to participating boxers ahead of the third edition as the best boxer from the six professional bouts slated for the night, aside his or her fighter’s purse, claimed a prize money of N1 million.
Clearly the biggest prize money so far and it has remained till date.
It is no surprise that amateur boxers are now keener to turn professional because GOtv Boxing Night has offered them the platform to get fights on a regular basis.
Financially, boxers now enjoy a new lease of life. Once upon a time, boxers’ purses were really poor.
From Lagos, GOtv added Ibadan to its roster considering the popularity of the sport in the city.
Truth be told, Ibadan has hosted some of the biggest fights in the continent and has produced some of Nigeria’s best fighters.
Ibadan hosted the 25th edition and Stephen “Freeman” Kadima was crowned the Best Boxer of the Night.
Television
The icing on the cake clearly is the fact that GOtv Boxing is shown live in over 47 countries. This gives additional exposure to the boxers.
Partners
Aside GOtv, other sponsors who have contributed to the success story of GOtv Boxing Night include Flykyte, MultiChoice, Super Sports, Complete Sports, Paragonis, K Square, Custodian and Brila Radio.
Best Boxer Award
Since its introduction several boxers have claimed the most-sought-after award.
They include Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, Oto “JoeBoy” Joseph, Stanley “Edo Boy” Eribo and Waidi “Scoro” Usman amongst others.
Stephen “Freeman” Kadima is the latest winner of the award.
