The Federation Cup dream of top flight sides, Akwa United and Shooting Stars Sports Club crashed on Wednesday following their elimination by underdogs; EFCC and Warri Wolves.
Akwa United and Shooting Stars, both former champions of the competition lost on penalties.
Second division EFCC, shocked the Uyo side with an early goal in the 3rd minute and fought hard to preserve the scoreline till the interval.
Akwa United’s effort paid off seven minutes after the interval with the equalizer. However, the Abuja side fought hard to deny the former champions a second goal.
It was a day top stars like Ubong Friday and Matthew Etim tried all the tricks in the game without success.
EFCC eventually won 9-8 to book a place in the last 16.
Warri Wolves also turned out to be a difficult customer for Shooting Stars.
Despite the presence of experienced campaigners like Sikiru Alimi, Okeimute Odah, Promise Damala, Samuel Tiza, Douglas Archiv, Adeleye Anikikaye and former Maccabi Haifa defender, Ikouwem Utin, the four time champions couldn’t over the determined underdogs desperate to cause an upset.
The match dragged into penalties with EFCC winning 4-3.
