Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard and other leading corporate organisations have thrown their weight behind the fifth edition of Cycling Lagos, an initiative promoting cycling, environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.
The growing corporate support is expected to further strengthen the 2026 edition of the event, scheduled for Saturday, September 12, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
In a statement on its sponsorship of the initiative, Union Bank said its decision was driven by the wider impact of Cycling Lagos on the state, noting that the event goes beyond sport to promote environmental sustainability.
“Our support for this project is in recognition of the impact that this initiative has on the State, which extends beyond sport event into environmental sustainability,” the bank stated.
President/CEO of Cycling Africa, Bamidele Adeleye, said the increasing participation of private-sector organisations reflects a growing understanding of the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling environmental challenges while encouraging healthier lifestyles and sustainable development.
Adeleye expressed appreciation to Union Bank, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard, the Lagos State Cycling Association and other supporting organisations for identifying with the vision of Cycling Lagos.
According to him, the event has evolved beyond a conventional cycling competition to become a platform for promoting healthier communities, environmental responsibility, recycling and sustainable development.
“We are particularly encouraged by the support from corporate organisations that understand that cycling can be a powerful platform for communicating important messages about the environment and sustainability,” Adeleye said.
He added that the organisers would use the fifth anniversary edition to deepen public conversations around recycling and encourage individuals, businesses and governments at all levels to take practical steps towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable society.
Themed “Trash to Treasure,” the fifth edition of Cycling Lagos is being organised by Cycling Africa in collaboration with the Lagos State Cycling Association.
The event will place a strong emphasis on recycling, environmental awareness and the economic and environmental opportunities within Nigeria’s waste management sector.
As part of the anniversary activities, organisers will also host the 5th Cycling Lagos Webinar on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The webinar, themed “Trash to Treasure: Unlocking Recycling Capacity for a Sustainable Future,” will bring together policymakers, environmental advocates, recycling practitioners, businesses, experts and other stakeholders to explore practical strategies for expanding Nigeria’s recycling capacity.
The main event will feature cycling activities for both adults and children, alongside advocacy and awareness initiatives aimed at promoting cycling, environmental responsibility and sustainable living.
With the backing of corporate organisations and other stakeholders, the organisers say the fifth edition is expected to further position Cycling Lagos as a platform where sport, environmental advocacy and community development intersect.
