Fatodu attributes impressive turnout at WBA Africa title fight to Sanwo-Olu’s grassroots policy on sports

Director-General, Lagos State Sport Commission (LSSC), Mr. Lekan Fatodu, has attributed the huge turnout of boxing fans at the WBA Africa title fight won by Taiwo “Eshepo” Agbaje, as a testament to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to grassroots support for sports development.
Eshepo was crowned the new WBA Africa Champion after defeating Tosin Osaighovo a.k.a Sojah boy in the vacant WBA AFRICA  10-round bout at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Tagged ‘The Unbeaten’, the fight was jointly sponsored by the Lagos State Sports Commission and promoted by DE LAD Boxing Promotion and sanctioned by the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control.
Boxing enthusiasts in the state were thrilled by the performance of both rivals, Osaigbovo from Agege and Eshepo, from Mushin.
It was the clash of the titans from two sides of the city with similar boxing history, and no fewer than 20,000 spectators were present to watch the much-anticipated fight.
The title fight turned out to be a communal fight show of supremacy over one another as their supporters trooped out in thousands to support their own, chanting various slogans, songs and support activities to gear up their athlete into action.
Eshepo won the title fight in a unanimous decision of 98-95, 96-98, and 98-96, which takes his record to 19 wins from 19 bouts.
Speaking at a post victory conference, he said, “This is a stepping stone for me. I’m happy. Because this is my first title belt in Africa. I have a lot of other titles, but this is the biggest one. What happened this night is what they call boxing. You know all boxers are champions, but some are greater than others.”
Promoter of the fight, Alhaji Waidi Alabi, expressed his profound gratitude to the state government through the Lagos State Sports Commission for the great support he got towards the successful staging of the fight.
