Lagos State Sports Commission reiterates commitment to growth of Rugby through private sector partnership

The Lagos State Sports Commission has intensified efforts to grow rugby in the state through strategic collaboration with private sector stakeholders.

Speaking at the Rugby Exhibition match between the African Women All-Star Team and Nigeria’s Falcons, the Director-General of LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, emphasized the agency’s commitment to nurturing rugby talents among Lagos youths.

The exhibition game, organised by Alaro City, Rendeavour with support from the LSSC, served as a platform to showcase emerging talents and promote wider participation in the sport.

Fatodu emphasized that rugby holds significant potential in Lagos, noting that many young athletes are already showing strong interest and ability in the game. He added that the Commission is focused on creating opportunities through partnerships that will enhance infrastructure, provide resources, and deliver quality training for athletes.

He said, “We know the significance of rugby. We have a lot of talents in Lagos State whose sporting interest is actually in rugby. The Lagos State Sport Commission is committed to supporting and promoting mass participation in all sports. So, we want to support in terms of opportunity to collaborate with the private sector to create more infrastructure for sports, and to also stand in the way of supporting the athletes in terms of growth, resources and relevant training that will help them to increase their capacity and ability in the game.’’

The Director-General also reaffirmed the Commission’s broader mandate to promote mass participation across all sports, ensuring inclusivity and development at every level.

In the match, Nigeria’s Falcons defeated the African Women All-Star Team, comprising players from Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire 30–12.
