Rangers stay top of NPFL as Rivers extend unbeaten run

By Abraham Essien
Champions, Rangers International claimed an important point at Barau FC to remain on top of the Nigeria Premier Football League after Matchday Eight matches were decided after their 2-2 draw.
A goal in additional time by skipper Chidiebere Nwobodo, who came in as a substitute left the home fans in disarray.
Rangers were forced to fight back after surrendering their advantage against Barau.
Ifeanyi Okechukwu opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half, but the hosts responded after the break when Joseph Atule converted a penalty.
Aliyu Sugau scored another spot-kick to put Barau in front before Nwobodo struck late to earn Rangers a share of the points.
The draw kept the Enugu side at the top, although their advantage remains slim with Rivers United breathing down their necks. The Pride of Rivers could not find a breakthrough against Abia Warriors but extended their unbeaten start to the campaign, keeping themselves firmly in contention.
The Flying Antelopes now have 17 points, one ahead of Rivers United, who preserved their unbeaten record with a goalless draw on the road at Abia Warriors.
Like Rangers, the Port-Harcourt side earned a point away from home to maintain their second position on the log.
Plateau United strengthened their title credentials with an emphatic 4–0 win over Kano Pillars to move into third place with 14 points. The result dealt a significant blow to the Sai Masu Gida, who remain in the lower half of the standings after another disappointing outing.
Enyimba’s difficult campaign continued with a 4–2 defeat away to Katsina United. The People’s Elephant have managed only seven points from eight matches and occupy 19th place, leaving the two-time African champions under pressure to improve their fortunes.
Elsewhere, Ikorodu City defeated Kwara United 2–0, while Nasarawa United recorded an identical victory over Doma United. Warri Wolves overcame Inter Lagos 3–1, leaving the Lagos outfit at the bottom of the table.
Sporting Lagos claimed a 2–1 home win against Bendel Insurance, while Ranchers Bees and Niger Tornadoes played out a goalless draw.
Kun Khalifat FC also secured a 2–0 victory over Shooting Stars, adding to the difficulties facing the Oluyole Warriors, who have collected just eight points and remain in the lower reaches of the standings.
With eight rounds completed, Rangers remain in pole position, but Rivers United’s unbeaten run and Plateau United’s impressive form suggest the battle for the NPFL crown is far from settled.
