West Africa’s premier Bank, FirstBank of Nigeria Limited, has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to golf development in Nigeria as the 65th edition of the FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship is scheduled to hold in November at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos.
The championship marks 65 years of continuous sponsorship by the bank under its first@sports initiative, making it one of Nigeria’s longest-running corporate sponsorships of a golf competition.
Over the decades, the tournament has played a significant role in promoting amateur golf, providing emerging Nigerian and international golfers with a platform to develop their skills, gain competitive experience and pursue professional careers.
Recognised by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the championship attracts amateur golfers from across Africa and beyond, offering participants the opportunity to earn valuable global ranking points while competing against some of the region’s leading players.
Organisers said the forthcoming edition would bring together top amateur golfers to compete over Ikoyi Club’s challenging course, continuing the tournament’s tradition of competitive excellence, talent development and the promotion of golf in Nigeria.

The championship is played over 54 holes, testing participants’ consistency, technical ability and course management across three rounds.
At the previous edition, Babatunde Oyalami emerged champion with a three-day gross score of 231. He recorded rounds of 78, 75 and 78 to finish three shots ahead of his closest challenger.
The tournament has also contributed to the visibility of Nigerian golfers on the international amateur circuit. Peter Eben-Spiff became the first Nigerian golfer to feature on the WAGR following his victory at the 58th edition of the championship.
As FirstBank sustains its 65-year partnership with the event, the Lagos Amateur Open continues to serve as an important platform for amateur golf competition, talent identification and the development of the sport in Nigeria.
The 65th edition is expected to further strengthen the championship’s standing within Nigeria’s golfing calendar and its contribution to the growth of amateur golf across the continent.
