Coal City Games to rewrite the National Sports Festival Story

Nigeria is gearing up for a spectacular celebration of sport as the National Sports Commission officially announced that the 21st National Sports Festival tagged “Coal City Games” will hold from November 27 to December 11, 2026.

The event is already being positioned as a defining moment in the evolution of the country’s premier multi-sport competition.

Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, disclosed this during the inaugural meeting of the Main Organising Committee in Abuja. With a firm schedule now in place, state contingents are expected to arrive between November 25 and 26, ahead of a grand opening ceremony on November 27. The festival will draw to a close on December 11.

Describing the timeline as “sacrosanct,” Olopade emphasized that the dates were finalized after extensive consultations with Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.

The Commission has praised the state government for its aggressive push on infrastructure, with new and upgraded facilities rapidly taking shape.

Olopade applauded Governor Mbah’s energy and commitment, noting that the pace of preparation signals a host city determined to deliver excellence.

Beyond logistics, the 2026 edition is expected to raise the bar financially with Premium Trust Bank as lead sponsor and it is projected to be the most financially robust in the festival’s history.

It is expected that the 2026 Festival will surpass the previous edition held in Abeokuta.

In a bid to streamline operations and reduce costs for participating states, the Commission has capped the number of sports at 20 under its reform-driven RHINSE agenda. Fifteen of these are compulsory, while five will be selected by the host state.

The core lineup spans athletics (including para-athletics), basketball and wheelchair basketball, football, boxing, swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, weightlifting, tennis, table tennis, badminton, cycling, judo, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts.

With momentum building, strong institutional backing, and a host city eager to impress, the Coal City Games is shaping up to be more than just another edition of the National Sports Festival. It promises to be a landmark event that could redefine standards, inspire a new generation of athletes, and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to sporting excellence.
