Sports Business Review:  Premium Trust Bank, others transform Bayelsa’s Prosperity Cup into Premium Sports Property

With a record N80 million total prize purse for the 2026 edition and N40 million won by champions, Okoroma United, Bayelsa State’s Prosperity Cup has evolved from a community football initiative into one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sports properties.

Okoroma United’s N40 million prize money is a record for grassroots football which makes it more rewardable than some national competitions.

What started as a grassroots football competition conceived by the Bayelsa State Government to drive social change and youth engagement across communities has steadily transformed into a commercially attractive football ecosystem attracting corporate investors, football stakeholders, scouts and global football interest.

Widely regarded as Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament, the Prosperity Cup is increasingly positioning itself as a premium football brand with expanding commercial value and national relevance.

At the centre of this transformation is Premium Trust Bank, whose strategic sponsorship has significantly enhanced the visibility, credibility and professional structure of the competition.

The bank’s involvement, alongside support from other corporate and institutional partners, has helped elevate the tournament beyond recreational football into a professionally packaged sports platform capable of attracting investment and long-term commercial partnerships.

The rising profile of the competition has also attracted international football interest, with FC Barcelona identified among global football brands engaging the tournament to create developmental value.

The increased financial commitment to the competition reflects its growing stature. From improved prize money and match-day organization to stronger branding, media exposure and fan engagement, the Prosperity Cup is gradually building the structure of a modern sports business property.

Managing Director of Premium Trust Bank, Emmanuel Emefienim, said the bank’s investment in the competition aligns with its broader commitment to youth development and nation-building through sports.

“Sponsoring the Prosperity Cup is our own way of contributing to national development. It is expensive, but we are giving back to society to support what government is doing,” Emefienim told www.sportbusinessbrands.com.

“It is important to engage our youths through sports. It’s something we are passionate about. We want them to discover their talents and be the best.”

That vision is increasingly becoming reality as the Prosperity Cup continues to serve as a talent pipeline for young footballers across Bayelsa’s hinterland communities. For many participants, the tournament represents more than silverware — it offers visibility, opportunity and a potential pathway into professional football.

Emefienim, who was represented by the Regional Head of Premium Trust Bank, Mr. Danjuma Omeje, at the presentation of cheques to teams noted that this year’s edition of the tournament was special to the financial institution because it coincides with the bank’s fourth year anniversary.

Beyond talent discovery, the economic footprint of the competition is becoming more visible. Match centres now stimulate local economic activities involving transportation providers, food vendors, small businesses, media operators and hospitality services within host communities.

Industry observers believe the Prosperity Cup’s rapid growth highlights the role private sector investment can play in developing sustainable sports ecosystems in Nigeria. The combination of government backing, corporate sponsorship and grassroots participation is gradually creating a replicable sports development model.

The strong institutional support has also enhanced the tournament’s credibility, positioning it as more than a local football event but an emerging sports asset capable of attracting long-term sponsorship, broadcast value and national recognition.

As Premium Trust Bank and other partners deepen their involvement, the Prosperity Cup is steadily consolidating its reputation not only as Nigeria’s largest grassroots football competition, but also as one of the country’s emerging premium sports business brands.

Other major sponsors contributing to the growth and commercial expansion of the tournament include Linkage Assurance Plc, Niger Delta Development Commission, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Nigeria Customs Service, Binad Table Water, Agco Engineering and the Bayelsa State Board of Internal Revenue
